CHAPTER EIGHT

Three completely different locations.

Pauline waffled between skepticism and belief. If what Noah said was true, she only had, at the outside, one more day to find the witch’s lair and take it into custody before it attacked another victim.

Time was not on Pauline’s side. She could spend hours just trying to locate the entrances to these caves, not to mention exploring the interiors. Maybe if she swung by Noah’s daughter’s place, he might be able to remember which one of the three belonged to the Skadegamutc.

She drove to the cul-de-sac and parked in front of the house. Despite it being dusk, the house was well lit. She pulled out her phone and dialed.

“Hi, Officer McCrory,” Marylou said. Call display, no doubt.

“I know it’s late, but I was wondering if your grandfather is still awake. I have a map I’d like to show him.”

“Grandfather is expecting you. Come on in.”

Marylou didn’t have to ask Pauline twice. She hopped out of the cruiser and hurried along the driveway to the entrance. Marylou showed her around the back. “Officer McCrory is here, Kummissoomis.”

“How did you know I’d be back?” Pauline asked.

“It is one of my many gifts. I know things. Besides, where else were you going to go?” The old man reclined in his chair with a colorful blanket over his legs.

“Is that blanket one of Alma’s creations?”

Noah nodded.

“I thought so. Alma was a real artisan.”

“Why don’t you sit down and make yourself comfortable,” Noah said. “I have no idea if this is going to work, but we must try something”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to perform another smudging ceremony. We have to attract the ghost-witch, try to distract it from its next victim.”

Pauline gazed into Noah’s face, trying hard not to scoff. “Of course, we do.” If a ninety-year-old wasn’t afraid to summon a ghost-witch, neither was she.

Pauline surveyed the coffee table. There was a collection of stones placed on the table. Each unusually shaped rock had a hole, or several holes, in it. She picked up one of the rocks. “What do we do with these?” She wondered if they were to be thrown at the witch but didn’t want to sound flippant.

“They are magical talismans. I have collected them over the course of my life. Mother Earth will offer us her protection because of them.”

“Why do we need protecting? I thought you said the ghost-witch only attacks once every seven days.”

“It does,” Noah said. “But I have no idea how it’s going to react to my attempts of purification.”

“Is that even possible?”

“I don’t think the ceremony will be successful. But filling the air with these herbs will likely make the ghost-witch very angry.”

“And what happens when it gets angry?”

“We’re going to find out. The more we know about the creature, the easier it will be to figure out how it can be destroyed,” Noah said. “Whatever you do, don’t let it take anything from you. Are you ready?”

Pauline sat forward in her seat while Noah set fire to another wad of botanicals.
